Putnam County Fire Police Response Team
Archives 1994 - 2012
The Putnam County Fire Police Team was requested to assist in controlling traffic for utility companies (summoned from all over the country and Canada), that were setting new utility poles and repairing power lines damaged by Hurricane Sandy. They were ultimately relieved by National Guard units.

Unfortunately the start Mahopac Falls Fire Department’s 75th Anniversary Parade coincided with a series of storms (that included tornado warnings) that passed through the region. The Putnam County Fire Police Response Team, who came prepared with their “lemon” rain gear, fared better than most marchers and viewers.

The Patterson Fire Department's Annual Parade, this year, was held under a threatening sky with the Putnam County Team assisting the Patterson Fire Police, Sheriff's office, and State Police with traffic control.

Members of the Dutchess County Fire Police Response Team were invited the Putnam Team's first meeting following the disastrous fire at Bob's Self Storage. At the meeting they critiqued their respective team's performance when they operated under mutual aid for over 8 hours re-routing traffic due to the closure of Route 22 at Rt. 312 in Brewster.

The Putnam County Fire Response Team continued their long-standing tradition of holding their Annual Christmas Party in April. After a fine meal and during the ensuing bacchanalia, three members; Phyllis and Gary Hoffman and Angie McGoorty were recognized for ten years service, while Bill Keating, John Bodor, Danny Hill, and Tommy Filecco were recognized for less noble achievements.

An elderly woman died from injuries she received when the car her daughter was driving collided with another vehicle while on Route 9 in Garrison in Putnam County. The car she was riding in attempted to pass a pickup truck that was making a left turn. Both vehicles landed off the road in the opposite lane, overturning and coming to rest after hitting a stone wall. the Garrison Fire Department extricated the occupants from the car, all of whom sustained injuries. The driver of the pickup was issued a summons by the PC Sheriff's Dept. who handled the accident reconstruction. The Putnam County Fire Police responded to assist Garrison Fire Police with road closures.

The Putnam County Fire Police Response Team was again requested to control traffic for Putnam Lake's Annual Christmas Parade which included over a score of fire engines and floats decked out with lights, other decorations, and merry-makers. Featured also was the big guy in the red suit along with Mrs. Claus. The evening concluded with refreshments and good cheer at the firehouse.

Virtually every fire department and town recognized the sacrifice made by those on 9/11/01. The Putnam County Fire Police Response Team was requested by Mahopac Fire Dept. to assist with their ceremony which was marked by the delivery of a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. A march of firefighters, police, and EMS members proceeded from their fire house to St. John's RC church for a memorial mass forcing a brief closure of Route 6.

At the request of the Putnam Valley Fire Department, the county fire police team assisted with a 5K run from the elementary school through the hamlet, terminating at the high school. The race involved eighteen traffic posts manned by Putnam County Sheriff's Deputies, New York State Troopers and fire police.

Members of the Putnam County Fire Police Response Team assisted Brewster Fire Police at a tanker shuttle drill involving a fleet of tankers from Putnam and Westchester Counties and neighboring Connecticut at the Mt. Ebo Corporate Park. One water source was in the park and a second approximately a mile south off Route 22.

Putnam County First/Sgt. Paul Boscia was guest speaker at the February PCFPT's Monthly meeting. In light of his dedication to office and interest in the team's training, (it was, after all, Valentine's Day), he was presented with a bouquet to take home to ease relations on the home front.

A dozen members Putnam County Fire Police Response Team helped the Putnam Lake FD usher in the holiday season by closing local roads for Santa's arrival and their annual fire engine parade.

Putnam County District Attorney Adam Levy conducted a refresher class on the New York State Laws related to the duties of volunteer fire departments and their fire police companies for the Putnam County's Fire Police Response Team at their September meeting. He has tentatively agreed to be a presenter at our 2011 Sheriff' Seminar. Also at the meeting, Team Coordinator Doug Casey presented the team with a citation on behalf of the Lake Carmel Fire department for the "continued support" the team has rendered to the department.
The Putnam County Fire Police Response Team was especially proud to work Lake Carmel’s 65th Anniversary Parade this year. One of their lieutenants, Honorary Chief Tom Filecco was chosen to be Grand Marshall. Tom is also Lieutenant of the Lake Carmel Fire Police Company and has been the Putnam-Northern Westchester Vice President for the Putnam East Zone for many years.

There was ample traffic & crowd control at this year's Annual Patterson Parade. No less than a dozen Putnam County & Patterson Fire Police, 2 Metro North Police, along with the 3 Putnam County Sheriff's units, and two members of their newly formed Bike Patrol worked together to keep everyone safe.

The services of the Putnam County Fire Police Team were again enlisted for traffic and crowd control at the Carmel Central School District Annual Homecoming Pep Rally which was held at the George Fischer Middle School. Also involved were the Carmel and Patterson Fire Departments along with Carmel Ambulance, which furnished lighting, fire control and possible medical assistance.

The Putnam County Fire Police Response Team assisted Brewster fire police with a inter-department tanker shuttle drill involving 12 tankers from the surrounding NY & CT departments. They were able to maintain 2,290 gal/min continuously for 3 hours. The drill involved no less than 60 firefighters. The drill was a success in spite of two minor emergencies. One fire police officer (quickly treated by a Brewster EMT), suffered a yellow jacket sting and one tanker, became stuck in the mud (and not so quickly, pulled to dry pavement).

Brewster FD requested the Putnam County Fire Police Response Team to assist with their Annual Parade & Inspection. As in the past, a good time was had by all.

The Putnam County Fire Police Team again assisted the Mahopac FD with traffic control at their parade and the six nights of ensuing bacchanalia at their carnival.

PNWFPA Member Robert Johnson suffered a Line-Of-Duty Death on Sunday, July 5, 2009 when he succumbed to injuries he sustained on October 20, 2008, while participating at a fire prevention demonstration for the youngsters at the Pine Grove Nursery School. Attempting to retrieve an air bottle from an engine, Bob lost his footing and fell about four feet striking his head on the ground and losing consciousness. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment but remained in a coma until his passing.

Members of the Dutchess County Fire Police Team were guests at the June meeting to attend a critique of the MA drill at the New Hackensack FD's 60th Anniversary Parade. The Dutchess team brought along a framed photo taken of the members of both teams who participated in the first MA team drill ten years ago at NHFD's 50th Anniversary Parade.

A major part of the meeting was a Power-Point presentation, by Coordinator Jim Ciulla, on the use of the new “Iamresponding“ call-in system. The plans for the “April”, Annual Christmas Party were also finalized!

The Annual Mahopac Parade & Carnival, cancelled for the past two years during the construction of MFD's new fire station, returned to give PCFPRT members practice again dodging traffic on Rt. 6.

The PCFPRT meeting began with a surprise birthday party for Capt. Bill Keating. Sheriff Smith & Undersheriff Convrey aware of the "fire hazard" caused by the candles, stopped in...just in case! Afterwards, the regular meeting continued in which past calls were critiqued and the upcoming parades discussed.

The PCFPRT turned out in force to enjoy a barbeque at the LCFD before re-routing traffic around the 311 causeway which was closed for the Independence Day event.

4th of July '07 fireworks in Lake Carmel...rained out!
10 Years after the LODD of Lt. Michael Neuner, Brewster Fire Dept. unveiled a memorial statue, and renamed their firehouse in his honor, at a ceremony held on July 30, 2007. The event, attended by many area firefighters, was followed by an outdoor reception. The Putnam County Fire Police Response Team was on hand for traffic and crowd control.
