Pawling FD arrived at a crash located on a slight dog-leg bend on West Dover Road, located about 1 mile north of the village. Although the area recently was dug out after a blizzard, ice/snow did not seem to be the factor in the accident. It looked like the silver car simply crossed into the path of the red vehicle. Although three were transported, all injuries seemed minor. The alarm came in around 10 AM and, thankfully due to the cold temperature, fire police had to close the road for only an hour.

Brewster Fire Police had to shut down Route 22 for a two car, Saturday night, fatal crash. Two females in a 2006 Honda were traveling south when their car was hit head-on by a north-bound 2009 Nissan occupied by two males. The 25 year old male driver lost control of his vehicle which crossed into south bound lane, north of Doansburg Road, instantly killing the 56 year old passenger in the Honda. An observer at the scene reported the estimated speed of the Nissan exceeded 100 mph. The male driver was air-lifted to Westchester Medical Center, the female driver and male passenger were both transported to Danbury (CT) hospital. Brewster FD was assisted by Patterson and Putnam Lake Fire Departments. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.

Answering the first alarm of the day before one’s morning coffee has always been difficult. Imagine the surprise Goldens Bridge firefighters had when they were toned out at 7:40 a.m. to respond to the local Dunkin’ Donuts. It seems an 82 year old woman drove her Mercedes across a sidewalk, through the front windows, until finally stopping completely inside the store. The driver and two injured patrons, including a pregnant woman, were taken to the hospital while a few others suffered only minor injuries and declined medical treatment. Fire police cordoned off the area to traffic and had to deal with many bystanders and disgruntled Friday morning Metro-North commuters who had to forgo their customary cup of morning coffee.

At about 9:00 a.m., a beer truck ran into the pole on East Main St. in Pawling shutting down electric service for about three hours, including the traffic lights on Route 22. A NYSEG employee's on the scene said they could not do anything until, "all fluids were drained from the truck"…in spite of the early hour, many fire personnel volunteered to assist but alas, none were chosen!

A car that stopped too close to an un-gated railroad crossing in the Hamlet of Patterson on Marble Quarry Road hit by a northbound Metro-North commuter train, rolled over several times before coming to rest upside down west of the single track line. Since the engine was almost to the Patterson train platform and crossing, the RR gates on Route 311 remained in the “down” position. Unfortunately, Patterson’s Fire Station 1, is located on the east side of the rail line. The first fire police arrived early enough to assume control of the crossing and cross streets and immediately cleared the traffic jam. This created a path for responders to drive between the downed gates to reach the firehouse and subsequently return with the needed fire apparatus and ambulance. Firefighters lifted the Honda Civic searching for a reported missing second occupant… a report which was later to be proved false. The male driver was transported to the hospital by Patterson FD ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Fire police assisted MTA Police with crowd control and after sun set, helped their department members with the transfer of passengers as they walked along the tracks to a waiting rescue train.

It wasn’t until shortly before 4:30 AM that the Kent Fire Department and Putnam County Fire Police Response Team were back in service after working at a 12:30 AM two car head-on crash on Farmers Mills Road. A 20 year old severely injured female driver, who was charged with DWI and several other violations, was transported to the hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit. According to authorities, a bottle of vodka was found in the woman’s car along with her dog that was killed. As is the case in most serious PIAAs, the road had to remain closed for the police investigation.

A mid-morning fire at Patterson Village condos in the heart of the Hamlet evolved to include over 25 fire department and emergency agencies (including those moving up, standby, ambulance, etc.) from Putnam, Dutchess and Fairfield (CT) Counties. Lacking hydrants, tankers a were the only water source available at the scene. All members of the Patterson fire police company turned out and were assisted by members of the Putnam County Fire Police Response Team. They assisted with evacuations, crowd control and were detailed to control traffic at two major road locations. The first at the main water source, known as the Fireman’s Ice Pond, located off Route 311, the towns the main east-west thoroughfare. No less than nine tankers shuttled water from the pond located ¾ of a mile to the condos, which are also located off 311 (the second fire police control post at the intersection of Route 292). Fire police control of the roads insured a rapid turnaround of tankers. At no time were the firefighters lacking for water and emergency road access to and from the scene remained open. The cause is unknown at this time. Although fire was through to roof upon arrival, ample man-power and team work confined major damage to only four units-two destroyed-two damaged in one building. Two minor injuries were reported.

A truck hit and left the RR bridge at Rt. 164 & Bullet Hole Rd, in Patterson, NY, hanging off it's concrete supports. Only a fiber-optic cable passing over the road held the span from completely collapsing. The Patterson FD Fire Police Company and the Putnam County Fire Police Response Team were dispatched to assist Metro-North with a road closure. Eventually the NYS DOT responded and put up semi-permanent "Road Closed" signs and the fire police were placed back in service.

Pawling responded to a fatal crash about 4:34 PM on Route 55. The driver of a west-bound Cadillac Escalade was killed when he drove into the path of a 2002 Ford landscaping box truck with four occupants, two of which, required hospitalization. It took over 20 minutes to extricate the driver of the Cadillac. Pawling fire police were not released by the Dutchess Co. Sheriff’s Department until after 9:00 PM spending much of the time in a spring rain shower. Beekman Fire Police were on hand to assist Pawling.

Virtually every fire department and fire police squad in the PNWFPA area (which includes Putnam, Westchester, Dutchess Counties in New York and Fairfield County in Connecticut) was activated due to a snow storm that dumped up to a maximum of three feet of snow in some towns. Several “states of emergency” were declared. The heavy wet snow caused trees and power lines to fall, a section of Interstate 84 to be completely shut stranding some motorists over night and countless accidents reported due to hazardous roads. Electric company trucks from as far away as Ohio were called for assistance and crews were still restoring power five days after the initial impact of the storm. 02/25/10 |

Sunday December 13th dawned with clear dry roads and an air temperature of 17 degrees. Just before noon, falling rain froze on contact with the pavement instantly rendering roads in Putnam County and neighboring counties all but impassable. In three hours, from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm, Putnam 911 received over 629 calls (a total of 857 calls from 11 am to 4 pm…the most to date) for assistance and recorded 175 crashes (there was probably triple that number of fender-benders that did not require assistance and drove off). The most serious crash in Patterson was, between a 2004 Ford pickup that lost control and collided head-on with a 2001 Buick sedan on a hill on Route 22 just north of Route 164. Each vehicle had three occupants. An unbelted woman riding in the in the rear seat of the Buick received injuries that proved fatal while the driver, entrapped, was cut free and rescued by the Patterson FD. All the other injuries were minor or non life threatening. Putnam Lake FD assisted at the scene as did multiple ambulance squads & medics, both at the initial crash, and a secondary PIAA 100’ or so to the south. Several other crashes on the hill did not require medical assistance. Walking on the ice was almost impossible without the use of several bags of speedy-dry for traction. The NYSDOT sanders did not arrive for hours, and only after the call was terminated. One Patterson Highway sander did manage to reach the scene and assist just as the PC Sheriff’s Office was concluding their investigation. Every emergency agency with their fire police in the county responded to multiple calls and virtually every road was blocked for hours, by disabled vehicles. 12/13/09 |

After reporting an oil pressure problem, a single engine 1974 Piper Cherokee flying out of Orange County Airport to Danbury, CT, was instructed to make an emergency landing at Dutchess County Airport. The craft crashed four miles short of the runway in the woods off Spookhill Road (New Hackensack Fire District), killing the pilot and seriously injuring a passenger who was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. According to NHFD & East Fishkill fire police, it was difficult at first to pin-point the exact location of the plane, which was first thought to be attempting a landing on Route 9…in fact the initially established IC had to be moved (to a cooperative private resident’s back yard on a road off Spookhill) once the craft was found. In spite of the fact fire police closed Spookhill to isolate the scene, sightseers flocked to the area and entered the woods from all directions. Several consecutive rings of tape barriers were set up approaching the scene and along the perimeter and around scattered pieces of the plane. As an interesting side bar, the late NHFD Ex-Chief and Dutchess Co. Coordinator and Past President of The Dutchess Fire Police, William “Bud” Pottenburgh, some forty years ago, according to Rich Jackob, (President of the Volunteer Fire Police Association of Dutchess County), “was the catalyst that started” the VFPADC. “His foresight into the possibility of an emergency occurring at the Dutchess County Airport prompted him (the then Chief of the New Hackensack Fire Company in Wappinger's Falls) to call for a meeting of interested fire companies to preplan Fire Police coverage at the airport.” By November 17th, 1969 the “Dutchess County Fire Police” was formed…thereafter their name was changed to "Volunteer Fire Police Association of Dutchess County. President Jackob is pictured, officer in the yellow coat, in the last photo of this album. 11/22/09 |

Continental Village FD responded to two (2) fatal car-truck crashes on Rt. 9 in less than a week. A female driver crossed into the oncoming lane and into the path of an 18 wheeler loaded with sheetrock. The truck swerved to avoid the car and crashed into a tree where it burst into flames. The car collided with the guard rail. The truck driver died at the scene, the driver of the auto was STAT-Flighted to Westchester Medical Center. NYSDOT was busy removing the tree while Continental Village, Garrison and Peekskill fire police isolated the section of Rt. 9 providing for the police investigation and, rerouting scores of motorists.
11/16/09 Just a week prior on 11/10/09, Garrison FD, this time assisted by Continental Village, responded for a similar fatal crash involving a north bound Nissan Altima which crossed into the oncoming lane and into a 10-wheel flatbed. The car driver, who had to be extricated, got the worse of the crash. STAT-Flight transported him to Westchester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The truck driver was uninjured. Garrison fire police along with Continental Village fire police shut down Route 9 in the area north of Rt. 403. The Putnam County Fire Police Response Team was also requested to assist. 11/10/09 |

Tri-Village Departments (Buchanan, Montrose & Verplanck) attended a decontamination drill sponsored by Westchester Emergency Services in case of problems at the Indian Point Power Plant. A very interesting and a good training program that hopefully will never have to be implemented at the "Point".

Neighboring Pawling & Patterson fire police worked most of the night to close roads and regulate a tanker shuttle, alternately filling three portable pools, at a structure fire at 660 Old Quaker Hill in the Pawling. The 10,000 sq. ft. multi-million dollar mansion, built in a Colonial South African architectural style (replete with thatched roofs) was set back from the roadway and surrounded by a stone wall with only two access driveways for apparatus. No less than a dozen departments from Dutchess, Putnam Counties along with neighboring Connecticut, worked to bring the blaze under control. The cause remains under investigation. 03/07/09 |

With a wind chill temperature below zero, Lake Carmel & Patterson fire police worked together, under automatic mutual aid, on the east bound lane of Interstate 84. The driver was pinned in his car, that flipped over the guard rail and traveled 75’ down a 45 degree sloped embankment into a small stream. They deployed about 250 yards of cones reserving one lane for operations. 84 was shut down several times during the rescue to allow for responding apparatus, a LifeStar chopper from New Haven to land, and recovery vehicles. The motorist survived the crash. 01/15/09 |
